August 12, 2024 Regular BOE Minutes

A regular meeting of the Board of Education of the Creighton Community School District No. 13 was held on August 12,
2024, at 7:00 p.m. in the High School Library.
Notice of the meeting was given in advance thereof by publication in the Knox County News, as shown by the Affidavit
of Publication attached to the minutes.  Notice was also posted at the City Offices, front door of the high school, and
front door of the elementary school.
Notice of the meeting was simultaneously sent to all the members and a copy of their acknowledgment and receipt of
notice and agenda is attached to these minutes.  The availability of the agenda was communicated in the advance notice
as was the notice to the members of this meeting.  All proceedings hereafter shown were taken while the convened
meeting was opened to the attendance of the public.  The agenda for the meeting is attached and incorporated into
these minutes.
President Fanta called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.  He announced that the Open Meeting Laws Act Poster was
displayed on the wall at the entrance.
Members present: Greg Kuhlman, Erik Burns, Duane Fanta, Amy Borgmann, Dixie Hanefeldt and Josh Key
Others Present:  Superintendent Weber, Principal Nilson, Principal Friedrich and Secretary Hoffman
The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
Kuhlman moved to move the agenda.  Seconded by Hanefeldt. RCV: 6-0. Motion Carried. 
There was no public comment.
Reports:
A. Superintendent Weber stated that Guarantee Roofing examined the roof and made several small repairs. The
new HVAC installation in the elementary is nearly complete.
B. Principal Nilson shared that fall sports began today, teachers will be working on curriculum alignment this
semester and that the school improvement visit is tentatively set for November 5 th and 6 th . Principal Friedrich
has been working on updating several school safety documents.
C. There was no president’s report.
D. There were no committee reports.
E. There was no correspondence.
The consent agenda consisted of the monthly financial report, bills, July minutes, sale of surplus district Ipads for $25,
approve KSB School Law as the district’s legal counsel for the 24-25 school year, approve Knox County News as the
district’s legal newspaper for the 24-25 school year, approve Dana F. Cole as the school district’s financial audit firm for
the 24 -25 school year and approve bus routes as presented for the 24-25 school year. Kuhlman moved to approve the
consent agenda with the Burn’s Lumber bill pulled out. Seconded by Hanefeldt. RCV: 6-0. Motion Carried. Borgmann
moved to pay the Burn’s Lumber bill. Seconded by Hanefeldt. RCV: 5-0. Burns abstained. Motion Carried.
Discussion/Action Items:   
A. Burns moved to approve Midwest Bank as the district’s fund depository for the 24-25 school year. Seconded
by Key. RCV: Kuhlman – abstain, Borgmann – abstain, Burns – yes, Fanta – yes, Hanefeldt – yes, Key – yes.
4-0. Motion Carried.
B. Our activity admission prices have remained the same for several years and are lower than most schools.
Kuhlman moved to approve the activity admission prices as $5 for students and $6 for adults. Seconded by
Burns. RCV: 6-0. Motion Carried.
C. The transportation committee met at the end of July to discuss bus driver route pay and recommended an
additional dollar per route. After some discussion, Fanta moved to approve bus route pay of $68.50 per
route for the 24-25 school year. Seconded by Borgmann. RCV: 4-1 Borgmann – yes, Burns – yes, Fanta –
yes, Hanefeldt – abstain, Key – no, Kuhlman – yes. Motion Carried.

D. The board looked at a bid for a 2022 Blue Bird bus. The current buses are getting worn out and we would
use this bus as the activity bus until a route bus wears out. Key moved to approve the purchase of a 2022
Blue Bird passenger bus for $107,000. Seconded by Burns. RCV: 6-0. Motion Carried.
E. Superintendent Weber gave an update on property tax requests as it relates to recent legislation and
proposed legislation. It is currently hard to recommend what we will need until the legislation passes that
lets us know what we will need. We should have more information at the budget workshop.
F. There were no changes to the 24-5 handbook.
G. Key moved to approve all six board members attendance at the NASB area meeting in Norfolk on September
4. Seconded by Kuhlman. RCV: 6-0. Motion Carried

At 8:04 p.m., Borgmann moved to adjourn the meeting. Seconded by Burns. RCV: 6-0. Motion Carried. The next
regular meeting of the Board of Education will be held on Monday, August 12, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. in the high school
library. A budget workshop will be held on August 27, 2024, at 7:00 p.m.
