May 2024 Minutes

A regular meeting of the Board of Education of the Creighton Community School District No. 13 was held on May 13,
2024, at 7:00 p.m. in the High School Library.
Notice of the meeting was given in advance thereof by publication in the Knox County News, as shown by the Affidavit
of Publication attached to the minutes.  Notice was also posted at the City Offices, front door of the high school, and
front door of the elementary school.
Notice of the meeting was simultaneously sent to all the members and a copy of their acknowledgment and receipt of
notice and agenda is attached to these minutes.  The availability of the agenda was communicated in the advance notice
as was the notice to the members of this meeting.  All proceedings hereafter shown were taken while the convened
meeting was opened to the attendance of the public.  The agenda for the meeting is attached and incorporated into
these minutes.
President Fanta called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.  He announced that the Open Meeting Laws Act Poster was
displayed on the wall at the entrance.
Members present: Greg Kuhlman, Erik Burns, Duane Fanta, Amy Borgmann, Dixie Hanefeldt, and Josh Key.
Others Present:  Superintendent Weber, Principal Nilson, and Secretary Hoffman
The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
Borgmann moved to move the agenda.  Seconded by Hanefeldt.  RCV:  6-0. Motion Carried. 
There was no public comment.
Reports:
A. Superintendent Weber reported that the elementary boiler system will be replaced this summer. We are using
Aims Web assessments in the elementary and have had positive results this school year with our testing. We
will need to update some policies over the summer. There are several conflicts on the evening of June 10 so he
suggested a noon meeting that day.
B. Principal Nilson shared that we will host the conference junior high track meet in 2025. Our school
improvement visit will be this fall.
C. There was no president’s report.
D. There were no committee reports.
E. Thank yous were read from Jessica Hoffman for the McDowell Scholarship and Creighton FCCLA for the school
paying their state conference rooms.
The consent agenda consisted of the monthly financial report, bills, April minutes, and the approval of the sale of district
owned items. Hanefeldt moved to approve the consent agenda, removing the Burn’s Lumber bill. Seconded by
Borgmann. RCV: 6-0. Motion Carried. Key moved to pay the Burn’s Lumber bill. Seconded by Kuhlman. RCV: 5-0.
Burns abstain. Motion Carried.
Discussion/Action Items:   
A. The skid loader lease is up in June. The monthly payment will be going up and we would pay the same to
lease it for three years as to purchase it outright. Key moved to approve the purchase of the AKRS skid
loader at the end of the current lease for $38,514.71. Seconded by Burns. RCV: 6-0. Motion Carried.
B. The elementary teachers have done a lot of research into a new science curriculum. Hanefeldt moved to
approve the purchase of the McGraw Hill science curriculum for $27,947.13. Seconded by Kuhlman. RCV: 6-
0. Motion Carried.
C. Burns moved to approve the purchase of 25 Chromebooks from CDW-G for $9,916.50. Seconded by
Kuhlman. RCV: 6-0. Motion Carried. REAP or ESSER funding will be used to purchase these items.
D. The school safety audit was conducted on April 9 by Craig Frerichs. He only had a few minor suggestions for
us.

E. The Niobrara Valley Conference is looking at possibly adding some more schools. Creighton is one that they
are considering. The board looked at both the pros and cons of staying in the Lewis and Clark Conference or
moving to the NVC if we receive an official invitation. A committee was formed to discuss the issue further if
an invitation is received.
F. Upcoming conferences were discussed.
At 7:49 p.m., Kuhlman moved to adjourn the meeting. Seconded by Burns. RCV: 6-0. Motion Carried. The next regular
meeting of the Board of Education will be held on Monday, June 10, at 12:00 noon in the high school library.
